Rogers Pass Winter Permit Changes Announced for 2025/26 Season
Rogers Pass Winter Permit changes have been announced by Parks Canada ahead of the 2025/26 ski touring season, bringing new rules, facility updates, and an early-season closure for artillery testing.
From November 6–8, 2025, the East Rogers area will be closed while Parks Canada and the Canadian Armed Forces conduct a verification shoot — a precision test of the 105 mm howitzers used for avalanche control. Only six to ten rounds will be fired from a single gun position to confirm accuracy. With 270 avalanche targets across 135 paths, this testing is vital to keep the Trans-Canada Highway and CP rail line safe through the winter.
Officials remind visitors that avalanche control protects the transportation corridor, not backcountry users. Skiers and riders must carry proper gear, have avalanche training, and follow the Winter Permit System, which goes into effect annually November 15 through the end of avalanche season.
Key 2025/26 Changes
• Winter Permits required for all backcountry access, including Winter Unrestricted Areas. Anyone leaving the highway or parking areas now needs a permit.
• Mandatory online quiz for both daily and annual permit holders — redesigned for accessibility.
• New visitor facility: Summit Station replaces the Rogers Pass Centre during its rehabilitation. The new facility offers passes, permits, and limited retail, but no meeting space. Carpooling is encouraged due to limited parking.
• Illecillewaet parking now requires a Winter Permit for any stay longer than 30 minutes.
Located in Glacier National Park, Rogers Pass averages 14 metres of snow each year and is home to the world’s largest mobile avalanche control program. The Winter Permit System ensures backcountry users stay clear of artillery zones and active avalanche paths during control operations.
