Black Diamond Issues Voluntary Recall of PIEPS Pro IPS Avalanche Transceivers

PIEPS Pro IPS avalanche transceiver

Black Diamond Equipment, the North American distributor of PIEPS GmbH, has announced a voluntary recall of the PIEPS Pro IPS avalanche transceiver, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada. The recall addresses an issue with the battery compartment, which may cause the device to lose power.

According to the company, the PIEPS Pro IPS may fail to turn on or could inadvertently shut off if impacted or jarred. This malfunction stems from loss of battery contact when using certain AAA (LR03) batteries that are at the lower end of allowable size tolerances. If this occurs before or during an avalanche, the device may fail to function or turn off unexpectedly—significantly increasing the risk of injury or death due to failure to locate a buried victim.

Consumers who own the PIEPS Pro IPS should stop using it immediately and follow the recall instructions to have their device reworked. Black Diamond will repair and return the affected transceivers within seven business days of receiving them.

The recall affects all PIEPS Pro IPS units manufactured and sold between October 1, 2023, and November 22, 2024, with serial numbers beginning between 2326 and 2445. The serial number is printed on the label inside the battery compartment door.

To date, the company has received one consumer report of the issue, with no injuries or fatalities reported.
