Skier Avalanche Near Kicking Horse Resort
A skier sustained multiple severe injuries after being swept over cliff bands in an avalanche outside the ski area boundaries at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. The incident occurred on Saturday, January 11, prompting a swift response from Golden and District Search and Rescue (GADSAR).
At approximately 12:40 PM, GADSAR received reports of a size 2.5 avalanche triggered in the steep and complex terrain just outside the resort’s boundary. One member of the skiing party was caught in the slide and carried approximately 500 meters over cliff bands and through trees. The slide path is outlined below and the X denotes where the skiers location.
Despite suffering multiple major injuries, the skier’s airbag was successfully deployed most likely preventing a full burial.
A GADSAR member stationed at the resort responded immediately, while two additional rescuers were deployed via heli sling with support from Alpine Helicopters. The injured skier was stabilized on-site, evacuated by helicopter back to Kicking Horse Resort, and then transferred to B.C. Emergency Health Services for further medical treatment.
GADSAR provided this account of the incident, “A party triggered a size 2.5 avalanche from a notoriously complex piece of terrain named Terminator 2.5 directly adjacent to Kicking Horse Mountain Resort. One member of the party went for approximately 500m ride over cliff bands and through small trees resulting in multiple major injuries but was able to deploy their airbag and remain on the surface.”
This incident underscores the inherent risks of venturing into backcountry terrain. Skiers and snowboarders are urged to check the latest avalanche conditions with Avalanche Canada, especially following recent snowfall or high winds, and to ensure they are equipped with proper avalanche safety gear and training.
Stay safe out there!
