Haines Pass Avalanche Backcountry Skier Death
A backcountry skier was killed in an avalanche near Haines Pass, BC on March 22.
A group of five was ski touring 4.5 kilometres northwest of Mount McDonell when the fourth skier triggered the avalanche while descending the slope.
One skier was fully buried at a depth of approximately 1.5 metres and did not survive. Another skier was partially buried and sustained minor injuries. The buried skier was recovered by members of the group.
The avalanche initiated as a wind slab and stepped down to a mid-February facet/crust layer near the bottom of the slope. It was classified as a size 4 avalanche from a persistent slab on a northwest aspect.
Avalanche Canada wrote that wind slabs have the potential to step down to buried layers and become large, dangerous avalanches. It’s time to choose simple, low-angled terrain if you’re recreating in those areas.
Our condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, and to those involved.
