Alterra Mountain Company has announced the promotion of Elias Ortner to president and COO of Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing (MWHS) in Blue River, British Columbia. Effective immediately, Ortner will oversee all aspects of operations and guest experience, while driving the growth of this iconic heli-skiing destination. Ortner previously served as the general manager of MWHS.

“Mike Wiegele Helicopter Skiing is a unique and specialized operation, and Elias’ leadership was a key factor in bringing this legendary experience under the Alterra umbrella,” said Jared Smith, president and CEO of Alterra Mountain Company. “Trained by one of the pioneers of heli-skiing, Elias brings unparalleled passion and expertise to the role. We are fortunate to have him leading such a treasured operation.”

Originally from Austria, Ortner has been immersed in the ski industry for over 25 years, beginning his career in Salzburg. After a decade working with ski schools and becoming a certified guide, he met Mike Wiegele, which marked the start of a 17-year journey at MWHS. Ortner has gained experience in nearly every facet of the business, from guiding to managing guest groupings and ultimately becoming the guiding operations manager. His close collaboration with Mike Wiegele has been instrumental in his leadership development, culminating in his most recent position as general manager.
