Heli Skier Killed by Avalanche in Selkirk Mountains
A heli skier was killed February 19 after triggering a persistent slab avalanche in the Selkirk Mountains southeast of Revelstoke while skiing with Selkirk Tangiers Helicopter Skiing.
The avalanche occurred in the Akolkolex River drainage, approximately 19 kilometres from Revelstoke, on a southeast-facing slope at roughly 2,150 metres — treeline terrain.
According to Avalanche Canada preliminary information, the slide was classified as a Size 2 persistent slab, about 80 metres wide with an average crown depth near 50 centimetres. The skier, reported to be the last in the group descending, triggered the slope.
Guides responded immediately. The skier was located under approximately 1.5 metres of snow. Advanced life-saving measures were initiated on scene before transport to hospital in Revelstoke, where the individual later succumbed to injuries. No other guests or guides were injured.
In a statement, Selkirk Tangiers Helicopter Skiing confirmed the fatality and extended condolences to the guest’s family, friends, staff and others affected.
Revelstoke RCMP confirmed they are assisting the BC Coroners Service. No criminality is suspected.
The Selkirks have carried a persistent slab problem this winter in several drainages. This incident occurred in managed, guided terrain — a reminder that even with professional oversight, avalanche hazard remains a real and present variable in big mountain skiing.
Powder Canada extends condolences to those impacted.
