The Final Push: Help Finish the Robson Pass Hut
At over 1,600 metres in the heart of Mount Robson Provincial Park, construction of the new Robson Pass Hut (Byron Caldwell Hut) is nearing completion. After a season of unpredictable mountain weather, the dedicated crew from Ennadai Woodworks continues to push forward—working against the clock and the elements to bring this long-awaited backcountry refuge to life.
From the first airlifts of material to the final touches on the deck, every step of this build has been a lesson in perseverance, teamwork, and alpine grit. The crew, who’ve been living on-site for months, faced freezing temperatures, stubborn clouds that grounded helicopters, and even a few curious porcupines. But their determination has paid off: the hut’s exterior is now complete, including stairs and decking—a major milestone before winter fully sets in.
While waiting out the weather, the team turned their focus indoors. Kitchen cabinets, bunks, and furniture are being fitted, while others are hard at work finishing the outhouse—a humble but essential piece of mountain infrastructure. With a temporary heater now in place, the once-frigid shell is transforming into a warm, welcoming space that will soon shelter climbers and hikers exploring the spectacular Robson Pass region.
Evenings bring a different rhythm to camp life. With the legendary camp cook Pierre gone after 110 straight days, the crew has embraced shared meals, long card games, and laughter in the kitchen tent. Their commitment—and camaraderie—are the true spirit of the backcountry.
Now, as snow begins to fall and days grow shorter, the project has reached its final critical stage. The Alpine Club of Canada (ACC) is calling on its community to help finish the job.
Thanks to a matching gift from the Sarjeant family, every donation made before December 31 will be doubled up to $200,000. This gift honours the memory of Byron Caldwell, a passionate mountaineer and friend whose name will grace the new hut.
With your support, the Robson Pass (Byron Caldwell) Hut will open in summer 2026, offering a safe and sustainable base for those drawn to Canada’s highest peak and one of the Rockies’ most iconic landscapes.
The hut is nearly there—but it needs one last push from the mountain community that believes in its promise.
