Snow Sports community Deeply Affected

Snow Sports community

A tragic avalanche at Stellar Heliskiing is the most serious backcountry incident of the season and it has deeply affected the snow sports community. It claimed the lives of three esteemed individuals: Jason “J” Remple, Alex Pashley, and Jeff Keenan. A fourth individual, Clay Mitchell from Nelson, is currently hospitalized with severe injuries, and we extend our heartfelt wishes for his full recovery.

Jason Remple, aged 53, founder and lead guide of Stellar Heliskiing, was a lifelong resident of Kaslo. In 2022, he expanded his commitment to local tourism by purchasing the Kaslo Hotel to accommodate his heli-skiing guests. Beyond his business ventures, Jason was an active community member, contributing to building biking trails, supporting Search and Rescue operations, and generously giving back to various local initiatives.

Alex Pashley, aged 45, served as the Global Sports Marketing Manager for The North Face. Known for his adventurous spirit and talent in photography, Alex’s work was celebrated across major snowboard publications. The North Face honored him, stating, “His search for adventure will forever guide us,” and extended condolences to his wife, Erin, and their beloved Bernese Mountain Dogs, Dale and Rainer.

Jeff Keenan, aged 44, was a professional snowboarder and co-founder of Dinosaurs Will Die Snowboards. Residing in Whistler, Jeff was remembered by Mayor Jack Crompton as “the personification of kindness,” highlighting his significant contributions to the snowboarding community and the love and generosity he shared with family and friends.

These men were not only highly skilled and experienced in their field but also deeply respected within their communities. Their tragic passing has left a profound void among family, friends, and the broader snow sports industry. As we reflect on this loss, our thoughts are with their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.

Other fundraisers will be announced as information comes forward.

Stellar Heliskiing has expressed its deepest condolences and indicated that further updates will be shared as appropriate.

This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the inherent risks associated with heli-skiing and the unpredictable nature of mountain environments. It underscores the importance of continuous vigilance, education, and respect for avalanche conditions to ensure the safety of all who venture into these terrains.
