A 42-year-old man from Golden, British Columbia, was killed in an avalanche on Monday while skiing Kapristo Mountain southeast of the town. The incident marks Canada’s first avalanche-related fatality of the season. Kapristo Mountain is located about 18 kilometres southeast of Golden and is the highest peak in the Beaverfoot Range.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), authorities were alerted at 10 p.m. after two skiers were reported missing. The pair had last been heard from at 5:30 p.m., prompting a search and rescue operation.

Elevation: 2,280 m

The avalanche was triggered by the first skier in a group of two near the top of the slope. The wind slab had an average depth of 20 cm, reaching a maximum of 40 cm, and measured 30 meters wide. The slide funneled into a confined gully, running 990 meters in length. The skier was found near the toe of the avalanche, buried 120 cm below the surface.

The man had to leave his skiing companion at the location to ensure his own safe return. Search-and-rescue crews used a helicopter to retrieve his remains.

This tragic incident serves as a reminder of January’s persistent weak layer and ongoing avalanche risk in the region. Backcountry users are urged to check avalanche forecasts, carry proper safety equipment, and travel with experienced partners.
