Whistler Heli-Skiers Buried in Avalanche

Five heli-skiers were rescued Monday afternoon after being caught in an avalanche near Pemberton, four were fully buried. The avalanche was triggered during “commercial ski activity,” involved a group from Whistler Heli-Skiing.

Const. Antoine Graebling of the Whistler RCMP reported that the individuals sustained varying degrees of injuries. Emergency paramedics treated three skiers, who were subsequently transported to a Whistler hospital in stable condition. Two others did not require hospital transport.

“They had two groups of skiers in the area at the time, for a total of five people,” said Graebling.

Among the group, four individuals—two men, two women, and their guide—were swept up in the avalanche. Four were fully buried, while one was only partially buried. Graebling noted that two skiers were trapped under the snow for approximately 10 minutes.

Whistler Heli-Skiing employees were the first to respond, joined by Whistler Blackcomb ski patrol and Whistler Search and Rescue teams.

Those involved are very fortunate to have survived, the statistics of a 10 minute buriel are not in their favour. The rescue effort saved their lives.

The considerable avalanche hazard underscores the inherent risks of backcountry activities, even for seasoned operators. Follow and read the Avalanche Canada bulletins for your area and be prepared.

Be smart and safe out there and Happy Holidays everyone!
