Kootenay Coldsmoke Powder Fest 2020
The Kootenay Coldsmoke Powder Fest is officially two weeks out and is must experience celebration of our Kootenay lifestyle. This is a three day weekend of everything backcountry in the best slack-country in Canada.
It’s a grass-roots gathering where both experienced and debutant skiers and snowboarders can celebrate the culture of powder pursuits in a friendly environment. Receive expert instruction and guiding in their backcountry and in-bounds clinics taking place on Friday and Saturday. Take part in a ski mountaineering race – The ROAM Randonee, or watch heroes huck themselves off cliffs in their brand new freeride competition – The Powder Crown. Attend a Bush Party on Saturday evening. Explore the local arts and mountain culture scene in Nelson, sampling local products, tasting delicious food and mingling with powder folk.
Whitewater Ski Resort’s friendly terrain and backcountry culture, combined with great snow, provides fantastic opportunities for all levels to ski, learn, compete, and celebrate off-piste and backcountry riding. This event also draws “keen to be” backcountry skiers and snowboarders who want to give off-piste adventures a try.
Whitewater has received 774cm / 305in of snowfall this season and currently has a settled snowpack of 278cm / 109in.
Last week Whitewater got hit with a storm from the south that brought warm temperatures and a lot of precipitation. This caused a 24h hour period of high avalanche hazard as there were natural avalanches occurring almost everywhere. Following the storm, the temps dropped to minus 14 and created a thick crust on all aspects and elevations in the area. This crust has dropped the avalanche hazard to low for the time being. As more snow falls in the next couple days, this crust will act as the perfect bed surface for new avalanches.
You’ll never know how great the Whitewater and the Coldsmoke Powder Fest are until you attend!
