The Other Side of the Avalanche Signs

Decision Making in the Eaglecrest Backcountry is an avalanche awareness film commissioned by the Southeast Alaska Avalanche Center for the users of Eaglecrest Ski Area in Juneau, Alaska. This is a really great video about decision making outside ski resort boundaries. It’s about Eaglecrest Ski Area in Alaska, but it’s got great points to consider wherever you’re thinking about ducking a boundary. In bounds, ski patrol do avalanche control but outside of that boundary you’re in uncontrolled avalanche terrain. Make sure you’re carrying the right gear, know how avalanches work, and consider things like the avalanche danger rating, weather and terrain traps. Travel with a partner, and learn about what the snowpack is doing so you can make appropriate decisions.
