Island Lake Catskiing Surprise Opening Dec. 3rd

The thursday morning email was brief, call to reserve before 1PM. I quickly called and booked myself and Rocky, a friend visiting from Comox, for Saturdays opening of Island Lake Catskiing. The plan was one cat with no frills for one day. Guide training and kitchen and service staff training was scheduled for the coming week at the vaillage area located 15 Km’s from Fernie, at the foot of the famed Lizard Range alpine.

Why the quick announcement of a single day of operation? With close to two metres of snow the skiing was awesome and they had more cat roads in than ever before at this time of year.

My next step was to call other friends before the 1PM email blast went out to the standby database. Later that day I heard stories of the remaining seats going in minutes past 1PM.

Opening day was as I have come to expect from my 20 years of playing at Island Lake. FANTASTIC! The snow was light and fast, the guides were keen and accommodating, and the group was hungry for that first day experience. The powder, smiles, laughter and flow were contagious–I’m already waiting for the next email invitation to Island Lake.
